Aniversarea a douazeci de ani ii ofera lui Shahab prilejul unei introspectii asupra copilariei sale, marcata de conflictele provocate in familie de refuzul lui de a vorbi si de relatia tensionata cu parintele sau. Povestea romanului Tatal celuilalt copil contureaza, prin ochii a doua personaje, viata unei familii iraniene tipice din clasa de mijloc, in care fiecare sufera, intr-un fel sau altul, sub povara rolului pe care i-l impune traditia. Tatal lui Shahab, Naser, este convins ca datoria sa fata de familie se limiteaza la a-i asigura confortul material, ignorind nevoile afective ale sotiei si copiilor. Maryam, mama lui Shahab, este nevoita sa isi sacrifice viata profesionala pentru a se ocupa de casa si de cei trei copii, iar sentimentele de neimplinire care o macina ii umbresc viata de familie. In momentul in care mutenia lui Shahab este interpretata de adultii din jur drept simptom al deficientelor mintale, neajunsurile existente intre membrii familiei se acutizeaza tot mai mult. Shahab isi pierde treptat increderea in sine, ajungind la concluzia ca a esuat in datoria filiala si ca nu este, de fapt, copilul tatalui sau. "Una dintre primele mele amintiri este o zi fierbinte de vara in care mergeam de mina cu tatal meu si pe linga noi a trecut un camion plin cu oameni care strigau diverse lozinci.
